The legacy of Mike Yandell
The award is named for the late Mike Yandell, a former Avesta Housing board chair. He was a diligent board member and was known for his impeccable attendance, tough questions and willingness to share his wisdom. He served as a banker in Portland for over 30 years and was the president of Gorham Savings Bank. He was known in Portland as a visionary and a community leader, especially in the arts, social services and business communities. Mike passed away in November 2008.
Today Mike is remembered for his generous spirit, his positive outlook and his commitment to making his community better. We honor his legacy each year by recognizing a person, business or organization that's doing extraordinary work in the field of affordable housing.
We present honorees with a clock to showcase in their home or office. A clock also hangs in Avesta's office in Portland, engraved with the names of the award winners.
On July 23, 2008, Avesta dedicated a clock that stands on the sidewalk outside our Pearl Street property to Mike in recognition of his longtime service to the Portland community.
