About Home Buyer Education:

Should I take a class? If you are considering buying a home in the next two years, our Home Buyer Education classes can help you qualify for a loan or grant. Covering everything from finding a lender or realestate agent, to navigating closing and inspection, these classes guide you through the process and help you make the decisions that fit your life and budget. Buying a home can be overwhelming and we are here to help!

We can also support you after the class if you need additional counseling! Our HomeOwnership Center offers free pre-purchase counseling for anyone who needs one-on-one visits or continued support even after purchasing a home.

What should I expect? Our Home Buyer Education Course is a 10-hour class taught by certified housing counselors and industry professionals.

It is hoMEworks approved and required for you to receive the $3,500 Maine Housing Advantage grant to apply toward your down payment and closing costs. In order to earn your certificate and qualify for the associated benefits, you MUST be present for all 10 hours of class time.

The course will cover:

  • The home buying process
  • Understanding your finances and credit
  • Shopping for a home
  • Choosing the mortgage that's right for you
  • Choosing a lender
  • What to expect at closing
  • Tips for life as a homeowner

The Details:

How can I pay for the class? The cost of the class is $30 per person or $50 per couple. If you register in person, the fee can be paid by check or money order either in advance or on the first day of class. If you pay online, you will have the option to pay using a credit card via paypal but you may also opt to pay by check. More details for payment can be found on the registration page.

Where is the class? Our classes take place at the Avesta Housing main office located at 307 Cumberland Avenue in Portland. During the class time, you are welcome to park in the lots behind the building in any spot or lot marked for Avesta. You will have half an hour to pick up lunch and, in the insterest of time and convenience, you are encouraged to bring your lunch back to the classroom and eat there.
