FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where are your properties located?

Avesta has apartment complexes throughout Southern Maine. For a complete listing please go to Apartments.

What types of properties are available?

Avesta offers a wide variety of apartment complexes ranging from market rent units overlooking Portland’s waterfront to specialized communities for low income seniors in rural Cornish. Communities range from complexes designed for the busy family with 1,2, and 3 bedrooms to transitional single room occupancies to assist individuals rejoining the workforce.

Because of the diverse nature of the communities, guidelines for qualifications vary widely. All communities have unique income guidelines, age restrictions, and qualifying factors. Our leasing specialists can help you find the communities that will best fit you.

More specific information is available by clicking on Apartments.

How much is the rent?

Avesta communities fall into two basic rental categories:

Subsidized housing- Renters pay 30% of their adjusted household income and the government pays the rest.

Affordable Market Rent Apartments- Rents are set amounts and range from $375 to $1070 depending on the size and location of the apartment. Most of the affordable market rent apartments have rents that are slightly lower than normal and accept Section 8 Vouchers, Bridging Rental Assistance(BRAP), and Rental Assistance Coupons(RAC) subsidy.

Why do I have to give you so much personal information before I’m offered an apartment?

Avesta uses public funds from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, USDA-Rural Development, Maine State Housing Authority and low-income housing tax credits to help provide lower-priced apartments and rent to low income households. These lenders require that we gather comprehensive information about our applicants and residents to ensure that they meet the government guidelines. Therefore we do ask a lot of information in order to process your application.

If you need assistance with completing your application, please call the Leasing Department for an appointment and we will gladly help you.

I sent an application in a few weeks ago but I haven’t heard anything. How do I find out about my status?

It takes approximately 5 days to process your application. After your application is received, it is reviewed for preliminary eligibility and you will be contacted about available apartments. If you have applied for a property that does not have any openings at this time, you will receive a letter letting you know that you are on the waiting list.
