UNITY GARDENS RECEIVES STATE RECOGNITION

June 2006 – Unity Gardens was awarded the Rural Development State Director's Award last month at a ceremony held in Lewiston. Rural Development's State Director, Michael Aube, recognizes one project a year to receive the State's highest award. Unity Gardens was selected as it was the first in Maine, and only the second in the Nation, to combine Rural Development funds with other State and Federal resources. Unity Gardens was also recognized for its unique combination of design, quality and use.

Avesta Housing opened Unity Gardens last year and has since developed a partnership with Southern Maine Agency on Aging to provide daily meals on site. Avesta is currently developing additional housing in South Windham for seniors that will open later this year.
