Portland Man Honored for Management of Gorham Senior Housing

PORTLAND, 7/17/12 - A Portland man has been selected by USDA Rural Development as the 2012 Site Manager of the Year for Housing for the Elderly in Maine. With peers and board members present, Georges Budagu Makoko, Property Manager for Avesta Housing, was presented withthe award during an Avesta Board Meeting on Friday, July 13th.

USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel said, “I am very pleased that USDA Rural Development has recognized such a hard working, caring and capable individual as Georges Budagu Makoko for his continued commitment to ensuring his residents have quality housing. Georges has constantly gone above and beyond what is expected, and he is very deserving of this important recognition.”

Georges said of receiving the recognition “The work that we do is inspiring.  I am glad to be part of such a noble mission, helping thousands of people find a home that they can afford.”

Gorges was raised in Rwanda and has lost many members of his family during the Rwandan genocide.  Georges pursued his education as a means to improve his life. He graduated from the National University of Rwanda with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Sciences, Social Science and Management. After coming to the United States, he committed himself to helping others, and achieves this daily in his role as property manager

A leader among the property managers at Avesta Housing, Georges cares deeply for the residents he serves at Village Square Apartments, as well as other properties within his portfolio.

The award is presented to an individual that meets the following criteria:

  • Tenant satisfaction with the manager is high
  • Property has good curb appeal on a continuous basis
  • Manager has no incidents of noncompliance and no unresolved findings
  • Manager consistently does more than what is expected
