Kennebunk, MAINE — Avesta Housing has awarded the 2012 Mike Yandell Award for extraordinary work in the field of affordable housing to the Maine State Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development. Avesta recognized Rural Development for its growing commitment to creating and preserving affordable housing in the state of Maine.
During a presentation Friday, November 9, at Park Street School Apartments in Kennebunk, Avesta President Dana Totman and Board Chairman Neal Allen presented the award to Virginia Manuel, USDA Rural Development State Director. Avesta has partnered with Rural Development since 1973 on a total of 16 housing projects across the state, including Park Street School, totaling 400 apartments. Rural Development’s Multi-Family Housing Program provides funds to construct housing, help residents pay their rent through rental assistance, and help preserve and rehabilitate existing housing.
In presenting the award, Totman highlighted the friendly and helpful nature of the USDA Rural Development Maine staff. “The personnel at the Maine Office of USDA Rural Development are simply a joy to work with,” he said. “Whether it’s new developments, preserving developments or acting as regulators, the staff has had an extraordinarily positive affect on Avesta and on affordable housing in Maine.”
Upon receiving the award, USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel said, “I am extremely pleased to receive this Mike Yandell Award from Avesta. Working side-by-side for four decades, Avesta and USDA Rural Development have ensured quality and affordable homes for hundreds of people in southern Maine. I look forward to many more years of preserving and creating great places for our Maine residents to call home.”
