There are 326 seniors on waiting lists for Portland apartments through Avesta Housing, according to CEO Dana Totman. Avesta only has about 6 openings each year.
It's a snapshot of a statewide problem. The oldest state in the country needs to have an additional 8,000 units for seniors by next year, according to the Maine State Housing Authority.
To put a small dent in that demand, Avesta Housing is proposing a new development at the end of Powsland Street, off of Congress Street in Portland.
