Avesta HomeOwnership Center awarded $20,000 grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation

The Avesta HomeOwnership Center has received $20,000 from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to support the center’s programs to assist Maine home buyers and homeowners.

Portland, Maine, Sept. 23, 2014 – The Avesta HomeOwnership Center has received $20,000 from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to support the center’s programs to assist Maine home buyers and homeowners.

Established in June 2012, the Avesta HomeOwnership Center serves as a one-stop shop for low- and moderate-income families looking to buy their first home, improve the home they own or avoid foreclosure. The Avesta HomeOwnership Center is a NeighborWorks® HomeOwnership Center.

“We thank the Bank of America Charitable Foundation for continuing to support our efforts to build stronger neighborhoods through access to home buyer education and financial capability education,” said Dana Totman, president and CEO of Avesta Housing. “Home buyer education helps families prepare for and sustain homeownership, which in turn has a positive impact on the whole community.”

A NeighborWorks study found that borrowers who went through pre-purchase counseling at NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Centers are one-third less likely than those who did not to fall behind in mortgage payments in the first two years of home ownership. Since opening in 2012, the Avesta HomeOwnership Center has helped more than 600 people realize a stable housing cost and build economic self-sufficiency, and helped nearly 90 families buy a home.
