Avesta Housing has awarded the 2014 Mike Yandell Award for extraordinary work in the field of affordable housing to Jess Maurer, executive director of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Portland, MAINE, Jan. 5, 2015 — Avesta Housing has awarded the 2014 Mike Yandell Award for extraordinary work in the field of affordable housing to Jess Maurer, executive director of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Avesta President Dana Totman, Board Chair Drew Sigfridson and Board Member Luc Nya presented the award to Jess during a presentation on Wednesday, December 17, at the site of the future Young Street Apartments for seniors in South Berwick. Avesta Housing selected Jess for the award for highlighting the complex issues facing Maine’s older adults and moving the state toward an innovative and collaborative approach that includes a focus on housing.

In presenting the award, Totman highlighted Jess’s collaborative approach, bringing together a number of stakeholders to have challenging conversations. “Jess has united all the groups that really want to help Maine’s senior citizens,” Dana said.

In accepting the award, Jess also recognized the efforts of AARP Maine Advocacy Director John Hennessy, as well as Maine Speaker of the House Mark Eves, for their commitment to improving the lives of Maine’s older adults. She also highlighted South Berwick’s support of affordable housing and community-building for seniors. “People all over Maine are in fact talking about transportation, housing, food and the other needs of older people, and how they can be met not just by the state but by communities like this one.”
