409 Cumberland grand opening

On Tuesday, August 12, Avesta Housing welcomed over 125 funders, dignitaries, friends and neighbors to the grand opening of its latest achievement in affordable housing – 409 Cumberland.

Located in Portland’s Bayside neighborhood, 409 Cumberland offers 57 efficiency, one- and two-bedroom apartments. It includes sustainable features such as a super-insulated building envelope, high-efficiency heating system, low-impact storm water management system, zero-VOC paints and low-VOC materials , low-flow plumbing fixtures, CFL and LED lighting and Energy Star™ appliances.

409 Cumberland combines healthy living and an urban location to create a community in Portland unlike any other. The rooftop features garden beds and a greenhouse where residents can grow their own vegetables year-round, and the Healthy Living Center on the first floor includes a demonstration kitchen where residents can learn how to make the most of their harvest, thanks to special programming by Cultivating Community.

The grand opening included speeches by Portland Mayor Michael Brennan, Avesta Board of Directors Chair Rebecca Greenfield, Avesta President Dana Totman, Avesta Director of Real Estate Development Seth Parker, Cultivating Community Executive Director Craig Lapine and three residents of 409 Cumberland.

Mayor Brennan expressed his appreciation for the ongoing efforts and successes by Avesta Housing and its partners in affordable housing in Portland and the Greater Portland region. Other speakers discussed their enthusiasm for the architectural achievement, organizational collaboration, community building, environmental awareness and healthy-living focus.
