Avesta Housing Reports Housing Needs Up 9% in 2015; Senior Households Represent Largest Share of Increase

For Immediate Release

February 8, 2016

Portland, MAINE — Avesta Housing has released its 2015 Affordable Housing Activity Report and reports that requests for its affordable homes increased by 9% over the previous year. Senior households accounted for the largest percentage of requests, as well as the largest increase over 2014. “The level of unmet need for a safe, affordable place to live is higher than we have ever seen,” said Dana Totman, President of Avesta. “The time is now to create affordable housing, especially for our seniors, at a much faster pace.”

Key findings from 2015:

  • In 2015, 3,348 people sought affordable housing from Avesta, representing an increase of 9% from 2014
  • The largest increase in housing requests came from senior (55+) households;  163 more senior households requested an affordable apartment from Avesta in 2015 than in 2014
  • Avesta was able to move 28% more applicants (434 in 2015; 339 in 2014) into one of our apartments than in 2014, largely due to the opening of 131 new affordable units in 2015: 409 Cumberland in Portland, Maine; One Meeting Place in Exeter, New Hampshire; Thomas Heights in Portland, Maine; and Young Street Apartments in South Berwick, Maine

At the end of 2015, more than 2,200 people remained on Avesta’s wait list for affordable housing. The entire report can be found on Avesta’s website, in the News section.

The Affordable Housing Activity Report is a tool Avesta developed to provide key information about the local demand for affordable homes. The monthly report highlights demographic information on the households that seek housing through Avesta, as well as those households Avesta is able to move into apartments. The report also tracks the age of the head-of-household, the household size and median income, and whether residents have the benefit of rental assistance.

Avesta tracks this data in a comprehensive way to better understand the region’s housing needs and the best ways to address them. The report is released monthly on Avesta’s website.
