Avesta Housing Wins Annual TD Charitable Foundation Housing for Everyone Affordable Housing Grant Competition, Awarded $100,000 for Blackstone Apartments
December 24, 2015 – Portland, Maine – Avesta Housing was recently awarded a $100,000 affordable-housing grant through the TD Charitable Foundation’s Housing for Everyone grant competition. The grant will be used to provide funding for rehabilitation and new construction of Blackstone Apartments in Falmouth, Maine.
Blackstone Apartments currently consists of 20 garden-style apartments that receive rental assistance under the Section 8 program from U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD). All units are restricted to seniors 62 and older or disabled persons. These apartments were built in the mid-1970s, have not received any major capital improvements since their inception, and require significant rehabilitation work. Having acquired the property in 2013, Avesta Housing plans to renovate the apartments by installing new siding, doors, windows, cabinets and flooring. The scope of work will also include better accessibility, improved pedestrian connections, and an upgrade to the community area.
Avesta Housing has recognized that there is a strong need for affordable senior housing in Falmouth, so in addition to the rehabilitation project, it is proposing to add 19 more apartments for low-income elderly individuals. The proposed building will be a two-story apartment building designed to match the rural character of the existing community. Blackstone Apartments are located in downtown Falmouth and are within walking distance of public transportation, the public library, shopping, retail, grocery stores, medical centers, hospitals, pharmacy, and other daily amenities and services. It is an ideal location for the addition of more senior housing in this town, where it is much needed.
Avesta Housing President Dana Totman expressed his appreciation for TD Bank’s commitment to this important project: “We are thrilled that TD Bank’s Housing for Everyone grant will help 39 senior households in Falmouth realize much-needed new and renovated affordable senior housing. TD Bank is an incredibly valued community partner.”
This year’s “Housing for Everyone” theme was Affordable Housing for Seniors, focusing on initiatives that support the development of safe, affordable, accessible housing for older adults, aged 55 and over. The Housing for Everyone grant competition is one of the TD Charitable Foundation’s most widely known signature programs. The competition invites local non-profit organizations from Maine to Florida to submit proposals outlining their plans and initiatives to support and provide affordable housing initiatives in their communities. Twenty-five organizations throughout TD Bank’s footprint from Maine to Florida were awarded a $100,000 grant for a total grant donation of $2.5 million in 2015.
