Avesta Housing Reports Housing Needs Up in 2016
Portland, MAINE — Avesta Housing has released new data describing the demand for and availability of its apartments over the past three years. The data outlines the number of households seeking affordable housing with Avesta in 2014, 2015, and 2016, as well as the number of households Avesta was able to move in to an apartment in those years.
The number of households moving in to Avesta apartments annually remains essentially unchanged. The current financing available for new affordable developments only allows for a small number of additional units each year. Despite the clear need for more affordable housing in the area, Avesta developed only 214 new apartments between 2014 and 2016.
Dana Totman, Avesta Housing President & CEO, explains, “The fact that the requests we receive for affordable housing increase each year but our move-in numbers are flat is especially concerning as we anticipate budget cuts on the Federal level. Bond resources at the State level have always been and will continue to be the difference between failing or succeeding to increase the supply of safe, quality, and affordable housing for Mainers in need. We have nearly 3,000 people sitting on our housing wait list. Very few will get the housing they need without increasing the affordable housing stock.”
Avesta tracks data in order to understand better the region’s housing needs and the best ways to address them.
