We believe the best way to solve homelessness is by providing safe, affordable homes along with concentrated support services for those in need.
In partnership with Preble Street, we provide apartments and 24/7 support services to individuals who have experienced persistent homelessness. This Housing First model has proven to be the most effective way to end homelessness in cities throughout the country.
Avesta developed, owns, and manages three Housing First communities – Logan Place, Florence House, and Huston Commons. Preble Street provides 24/7 support services for Logan Place and Florence House residents.
These properties have been enormously successful in allowing some of our most vulnerable, traumatized neighbors the opportunity to reclaim their lives and their futures.
More on Housing First:
National Alliance to End Homelessness

March 24th, 2005, the day Preble Street and Avesta Housing opened Logan Place and gave safe, permanent homes to 30 chronically homeless Mainers, was the best day of my career. Five years later, we followed up that success with Florence House.
Preble Street couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Avesta to embark on this exciting new phase of our mission. They listened with open ears, and open hearts, to the audacious idea that we could do better for our homeless neighbors than thin mats on the floor of a noisy, overcrowded shelter. Their dedication enabled us to advance our mutual vision of permanent affordable housing from just an idea, a dream, to actual buildings that now house scores of real human beings.
