About the Project
Carleton Street Apartments is a 37-unit affordable-housing community serving the workforce population. Located in Portland’s historic West End, the building is inspired by the historical architecture and vibrant urban neighborhood. The site plan reduced curb cuts, preserved mature trees, established continuity of the historical fence across the property, rebuilt the sidewalk, and created an active street frontage with community space, bay windows, and living units all oriented toward Carleton Street.
The property is located in the R-6 zoning district. In addition to meeting the zoning requirements, the project furthers primary objectives of the zone by providing multifamily dwellings at a high density and serving differing types of households. The prime location of the building site supports Smart Growth design principles with abundant employment opportunities, critical services, and public transportation within a short walking distance of the site.
