The Deering Place proposal presents an opportunity to preserve, redevelop, and expand affordable housing in a highly desirable and accessible location within Portland, Maine. The development site is 1.12 acres of land containing three contiguous lots located in a highly walkable area in the historic Parkside neighborhood in downtown Portland. Deering Place is in close proximity to daily amenities and services within the downtown area, which makes it a prime location for housing. MaineHealth, Deering Oaks Park, a pharmacy, bus stops, schools, grocery store, and park are all within a half mile.
There are 13 existing rental units. The Deering Place development project will include a major renovation of the existing units and the construction of two new residential buildings on adjacent lots to the existing building. Upon completion, there will be 69 new units for a total of 82 apartments. Amenities will include a new community room, laundry room, and indoor parking that will be accessible to residents in all buildings. The grounds will be well landscaped with easily-accessible walkways and sitting areas. There is currently a community policing office onsite that will remain.
Deering Place comes at a time when the need for affordable housing in Portland is greater than ever. Apartments will be targeted to individuals and families making between $20,000-$40,000.
