Avesta Housing is proposing to redevelop the historic Southgate farmhouse located at 577 US Route 1 in Scarborough, Maine into 38 units of affordable housing. Avesta will develop, own, and manage the property.
The site resembles a traditional New England farm, with a stately main house dating to 1805, an attached service wing, two historic barns, and two additional outbuildings. A grocery store, bank, elementary school, bus stop, and drugstore are within a half-mile walking distance.
The existing farmhouse, a prominent historic structure built in 1805, will be completely reconfigured and restored into 8 new one- bedroom apartments.
In addition to the rehabilitated 8 units in the main house, a new 30-unit building will be set into the hill behind the existing structures and will be designed to complement the historic farmhouse. The building will house 4 studio, 6 one-bedroom, 12 two-bedroom, and 8 two-bedroom non-age-restricted apartments for households making 50% to 60% of area median income.
The town of Scarborough has the third highest percentage of renters spending 50% or more of their incomes on rent and is actively seeking opportunities to expand rental housing options. Accordingly, the target population for this project is very diverse: young families with or without children, seniors, young professionals, those with disabilities, and anyone else that would benefit from affordable housing in the area.
