Yarmouth Senior Housing and Avesta Housing to Celebrate the Opening of New Affordable Community for Seniors in Yarmouth

Yarmouth, Maine — Nonprofit organizations Yarmouth Senior Housing and Avesta Housing will host a grand opening celebration of their recently developed affordable senior apartments, Bartlett Woods in Yarmouth, Maine, on Tuesday, May 1 at 2:00 p.m. Speakers include: Dan Brennan, Director of MaineHousing, Dana Totman, President of Avesta Housing, Mark Primeau, Board Chair of Yarmouth Senior Housing, and Pat Thompson, Yarmouth Town Council Chair. The program will include apartment tours.

Yarmouth Senior Housing and Avesta Housing co-developed and co-own Bartlett Woods, which has 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments targeted to households at or below 60% of the area median income. Bartlett Woods is located next to Bartlett Circle, 28 units of affordable senior homes that were built by Yarmouth Senior Housing in 1975 and rehabilitated in 2017. Avesta Housing President & CEO Dana Totman remarked on the project, “Bartlett Woods is the product of a strong partnership between Yarmouth Senior Housing and Avesta. We shared a passion for supporting Maine’s seniors with safe, affordable housing, and were fortunate to have the support of the Town of Yarmouth and its residents.”

Bartlett Woods is a sustainably designed building with photovoltaic solar panels and a tight building envelope. Bartlett Woods residents benefit from a telehealth program resulting from a partnership with MaineHealth. They also have access to cooking and nutrition programs with Cooking Matters and financial capability training and fraud prevention education with the Avesta NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center. Bartlett Woods was designed by Gawron Turgeon Architects of Scarborough and built by Bowman Constructors of Newport.

The 28 units at Bartlett are among only 66 affordable senior apartments that came online in Maine in 2017. Meanwhile, the Maine Real Estate Managers Association recently released data indicating that among 92 property management organizations and landlords throughout the state, there were a total of 9,890 senior households currently waiting for an affordable home.
