Avesta Housing and Kaplan Thompson Architects recently received the Sustainability Award for West End Apartments as part of the 2023 South Portland Business Awards, presented in a ceremony Feb. 21 at South Portland Middle School. Hosted by the City of South Portland Economic Development Committee, the Sustainability Award recognizes businesses and individuals “who prioritize sustainability practices and are making strides towards impactful change to our environment.”
West End is comprised of two buildings on Westbrook Street and provides 116 safe, quality, affordable homes for all ages. Most of the construction occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the campus’ completion is testament to the dedication and determination of Avesta’s development team, Kaplan Thompson Architects, the City of South Portland, and the many others who worked tirelessly to make it a reality.
“West End is a mixed-income, mixed-use community for people from all walks of life. Residents are individuals, families with children, people with disabilities, new immigrants, and more,” said Avesta Housing Senior Property Manager Hilary Glaus in her acceptance speech. “We have residents from 22 countries speaking more than 33 languages. They come from different backgrounds and different socioeconomic status… and they all call West End a place to call home.”
