Avesta Housing is building more than 500 affordable homes right now in communities across Maine, and more than 600 additional homes are in our development pipeline for Maine and New Hampshire.
Ranging in scope from renovations of single-story garden-style apartments for older adults to brand-new multi-story workforce housing for families, we are working hard to create safe, quality, affordable housing for all people in need to ensure that everyone has a place to call home. Here’s a brief status report:
- Seavey Crossing, Westbrook (61 homes, ages 55+; 20% complete) — Framing is nearing completion thanks to an innovative process that utilizes prefabricated large-format panels, significantly reducing construction time. Installation of the roof and windows are scheduled to begin in mid-October, followed by plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
- 89 Elm Street Apartments, Portland (201 homes, all ages; 7% complete) — Installation of the foundation is
75% complete and utilities are being installed in the lower half of the building. Avesta’s construction services, maintenance, and information systems teams are meeting bi-weekly to ensure logistical components are installed adequately.
- Edgewater Village, Farmington (25 homes, ages 55+, 78% complete) — Focus is on installing the remaining mechanical systems and finishes, including cabinetry and flooring. Exterior paving and landscaping are expected to be completed before winter.
- Choice Wedgewood, Lewiston (82 homes, all ages, 99% complete) — Developed in partnership with Lewiston Housing, this Choice Neighborhood development consists of nine buildings on four parcels. Eight of the buildings, including the renovation of an historic circa 1873 house, have been completed, and many are occupied by residents. Final punch-list items for the ninth and final building are scheduled for early October.
- Choice DeWitt, Lewiston (104 homes, all ages, 8% complete) — The second Choice Neighborhood partnership between Avesta and Lewiston Housing consists of two planned buildings. Concrete footings and
walls have gone up on the first building, and mechanical and electrical utilities are being installed. Construction of the second building is scheduled to begin in mid-October once the demolition of a former bank is completed.
- Foxwell, Kittery (50 homes, ages 62+): These garden-style apartments for older adults date to the late 1970s, and are undergoing extensive renovations over the next several months. All residential units will receive partial upgrades, and a complete makeover of the community room, including the installation of a backup generator, will create a safe place for residents during weather events.
