South Portland’s Long Creek Trail will soon receive a makeover that will make the nearly 20-year-old trail more accessible for visitors.

The South Portland Land Trust was awarded a $139,000 grant to renovate the trail. The work will begin next spring, and the trail is expected to reopen by the end of 2026, according to the Land Trust President Tex Haeuser.

The trail runs behind the Brick Hill Cottages, an affordable housing development run by Avesta Housing. Haeuser hopes that the improvements will encourage more people in the area to use the trail.

“The trail is a valued green space where people can enjoy nature without having to leave the neighborhood,” said Nicholas Kjeldgaard, manager of resident services at Avesta.
