50 Years of Avesta

Avesta Housing has been a leader in affordable housing development and management for half a century.

2022

Following a nationwide search, Rebecca Hatfield is chosen as the next president and CEO. Previously senior vice president of real estate at Avesta, her promotion to president and CEO is the latest testament to the skills and accomplishments she has exhibited since joining the organization in 2015.

2022

Avesta Housing celebrates its 50th anniversary. The organization is the largest nonprofit affordable housing provider in northern New England, with more than 100 properties providing homes to more than 4,000 people, a staff of more than 300, and $350 million in assets.

2017

Avesta partners with nonprofit 75 State Street, an independent- and assisted-living senior community nestled in the West End neighborhood of Portland, Maine. Avesta partners with Preble Street to develop Huston Commons, the third Housing First community in Portland, Maine.

2012

The Avesta HomeOwnership Center is launched to provide home buyer education, foreclosure prevention counseling, and financial planning assistance to the public.

2007

Avesta Housing partners with Preble Street to develop and operate Logan Place, the first Housing First property in Maine, for people experiencing homelessness. Florence House follows in 2010, and Huston Commons in 2017.

2003

York-Cumberland Housing changes its name to Avesta Housing to reflect its growing geographic reach. Headquarters moved to Portland, Maine.

York-Cumberland Housing co-founds the Southern Maine Affordable Rental Housing Coalition, which would later become Maine Affordable Housing Coalition (MAHC).

1972

York-Cumberland Housing established in Gorham, Maine, to address affordable housing needs in the southern part of the state.
