Homeownership

Homeownership

Avesta Housing is expanding our work to create more affordable homeownership opportunities for middle-income households. By restoring existing homes and building new ones, Avesta is offering home buyers with two different ownership options.

A Path Forward

Avesta Housing has created a pathway to homeownership for Maine residents priced out of the marketplace. A Path Forward is an innovative program that acquires and restores properties, making them available at below-market prices to moderate-income households.

Using a Community Land Trust model, Avesta manages these properties in a way that preserves affordability in perpetuity while building modest equity for the homeowners. This approach allows individuals and families to build generational wealth and establishes permanent affordability into the fabric of our region’s housing future.

Domus

Workforce housing is an essential component of a healthy, diverse community, but the rapid rise in housing costs has made buying a home out of reach for thousands of middle-income wage earners. Domus was created to address this need.

A partnership between Avesta Housing, developer Jack Soley, and builder Hebert Construction, Domus is dedicated to developing and selling high-quality, energy-efficient homes for middle-income wage earners in Maine. Without reliance on federal, state, or municipal subsidies, it addresses the “missing middle” in homeownership by focusing on this underserved segment of the population, allowing them to realize their dream of owning a home while building long-term financial stability and generational wealth..

Homebuyer Education

Taught by HUD-certified housing counselors and industry professionals with expertise in their fields, this 8-hour course meets one of the requirements to receive the $5,000 MaineHousing Advantage Grant that can be applied toward down payment and closing costs.

Class participants learn how to navigate the home-buying process, manage money and maximize creditworthiness, qualify for and obtain a mortgage loan, get the most out of a home inspection, and complete the closing process.
