Avesta Housing’s work is grounded in the principle that everyone deserves a place to call home, and yet Avesta knows firsthand the struggles older adults face when seeking adequate housing. Avesta provides safe, affordable homes to 4,500 people each year, half of whom are older adults. Yet the number of older adults seeking an affordable home each year far exceeds Avesta’s capacity to help. Since the emergence of COVID-19, the urgency around having a safe, stable, and affordable home has intensified. Affordable housing is vital to more than just individual wellness, it has emerged as a top public health concern. Low-income older adults living in unstable, overcrowded, or otherwise unhealthy conditions are at personal risk and pose an additional risk to the health and wellbeing of the larger communities in which they live.
THE SILVER HEARTH FUND
Securing an affordable home is critical to the health and well-being of older adults, which is why Avesta Housing and its partners have embarked on a fundraising campaign called The Silver Hearth Fund. The Silver Hearth Fund will provide vital support to assist the most vulnerable among Maine’s older population. The goal is to raise $2,000,000 over three years for the following priorities:
